Convention was awesome!! Thank you to all who attended the New Jersey Nursing Students, Inc. (NJNS) 66th Annual Convention Caring and Endurance: Finding the Balance. From the dedication and professionalism shown at the early morning delegate meetings to the attentiveness of students during the opening ceremony and break-out sessions, it was apparent that the students of New Jersey are true leaders. It is my greatest hope that you gained insight, a new study tip, and even a new friend while enjoying the activities of convention. The entire NJNS board worked tirelessly to ensure you all had the opportunity to connect, network, and establish lifelong bonds with your fellow nursing peers.
Our keynote speaker, Dr. Bob Atkins, gave great insight on his unique journey through nursing and important lessons learned along the way. He passionately explained the importance of incorporating the community in health care initiatives and learning THEIR needs and improvement areas. Deans and Directors Luncheon speaker, Rosemary Mortimer, highlighted the importance of faculty support of students and why encouraging students to join pre-professional organizations is vital to the success of professional organizations as registered nurses. As this year’s president, I hope that I was able to inspire and empower you while completing your nursing journey. I’m so appreciative of people who inspired me along my journey so it is only right for me to pay it forward.
As you complete your nursing school and begin your career remember to be AMAYEZING!
Assertive — speak up and be an advocate for yourself and your patients.
Mindful — be aware of when you’re feeling overwhelmed and take time to destress even if it’s to take a few deep breaths.
Accountable — accept responsibility for your actions and take steps to progress professionally whether attending a seminar or finding a nurse mentor.
Yourself! — No one can be you and that is your power.
Excited about each shift because ou’re making a difference in someone’s life!
Zealous about providing patient care (even when you don’t feel appreciated).
Inspiring to your classmates in the classes following you. Take a few minutes to give them advice/help that you wish you had).
Nice – being in the hospital can be scary and a genuinely nice nurse may turn someone’s day around.
Grateful — to wake up each morning and see another day.
And when those super stressful and doubtful times come around, you can always say to yourself, “I know I can be what I want to be. If I work hard at it, I’ll be where I want to be.”
Thank you again to all the students, faculty, sponsors, and donors who attended the convention. Your participation is imperative and vital to continued success of NJNS. It has been such a blessing being a part of such a dedicated and passionate board. Each member displayed a positive attitude and worked hard to ensure a successful 2017-2018 year. I’m happy to have made lifelong friends and colleagues. Have a great semester and be sure to incorporate a little “me-time”!
